These Hand-woven Straw Hats are crafted in Ecuador from the Toquilla palm fiber. Although technically an ARC Import, these practical and stylish hats have a deep connection with American apparel. Often referred to as Panama Hats, these toquilla palm hats were born in the coastal forests of Ecuador and exported to Panama in the mid-19th century and purchased by fortune seekers on their way to the California gold rush. During the Spanish American War, the US government requisitioned 50,000 of these hats from Panamanian merchants to outfit troops. Later, they became popular at the Panama Canal construction site during the early twentieth century, where they excelled in the hot and humid weather conditions.
